VARK® Learning Styles - Tutoring...With A Twist
VARK: Some people will be Multi-modal which covers a few areas

VARK Learning Styles explained | Kinesthetic learning, Learning styles, Learning methods

In 1st year Guidance, you took a profiler in class to assess what mix of styles suited you. You can take it again or just go directly to some of the strategies below. The ultimate aim is for you to be aware of what strategies work for you.

  • Visual Strategies: This preference uses symbolism and different formats, fonts and colors to emphasise important points. It does not include video and pictures that show real images and it is not Visual merely because it is shown on a screen.
  • Aural Strategies: This preference is for information that is spoken or heard. Making statements and using questions are an important for those with this preference.
  • Read/Write Strategies: This preference uses the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information.
  • Kinesthetic Strategies: This preference uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown as images and on screens.

Some people with multimodal preferences have told us find it necessary for them to use more than one strategy for learning and communicating. They feel insecure with only one. Others are able to “get it” using just one of their preferred learning styles.

A Visual Learner often likes to break down and summarise notes on to one page… this strategy can work for all learning styles…

The Forgetting Curve: USE IT OR LOSE IT

No matter what style you use, you need to ‘USE IT OR LOSE IT’. Reviewing material through whatever method suits you (flashcards/ cheat sheets/ recording yourself/ teaching etc) is the best/ only way to remember content in the long run.
